The onset of winter usually means that most of us let our guards down when it comes to household pests. That is not necessarily a bad thing, given the fact that so many pests go dormant in the cold weather. However, did you know that winter is a good time to check for woodworm infestation?
Regular readers of our blog will already know that woodworm infestation can be extremely difficult to treat because the larvae that cause the problem can live deep within timbers for years before emerging as adult beetles. That means you could have your home treated for woodworm yet still have trouble in the future. If your home has been treated in the past, winter affords you the opportunity to try a little trick that may help identify an infestation that has not been completely terminated. Here's how it works:
Sometime in the next few weeks, make a point of inspecting your timbers in any areas that you think a woodworm infestation might be present. You may see tiny boreholes, which is what alerted you to the original infestation in the first place. Cover those boreholes with either masking tape or a paint emulsion. Then sit back and wait for spring to arrive. You may have to wait as late as early May.
If there are still active larvae inside your timbers, any mature beetles ready to emerge in the spring will use those covered holes. You should see broken tape or emulsion that has been penetrated by the emerging insects. That will tell you it is time to call back the pest control company for another treatment. Better yet, call Pest Control Services for treatment if you live in Berkshire or the surrounds.
