What is Woodworm?

A woodworm is the general term used to describe the larvae stage of woodboring beetles. The woodboring beetle encompasses many forms and species of beetle in the UK, the most common of those being the Common furniture beetle.

How to Spot Woodworm?

When it comes to identifying woodworm there are some obvious signs that point towards and active or previous infestation.

1. Tiny round holes in the timber

This is perhaps the most obvious signage of a woodworm infestation. Usually spotted in timber typically in lofts or older timber frames around your house, garage, or barn! The tiny holes are usually 1-3mm diameter. The reasoning behind these tiny holes appearing is due to the beetle reaching maturity and exiting the timber to search for a mating partner.

2. Frass Dust

Also referred to as bore dust is the powdery dust found around the exit. Spotting frass is the biggest indicator you will find of an active infestation of woodworm. If the woodworm is dormant, it’s likely the dust would have blown away over time. This frass appears as the woodworm creates the tiny holes to go and find a partner to mate.

3. Damaged or weak timber

Years of damage can often result in weak timber that can often seem to appear chewed upon form the consistent damage of the woodworm holes and tunnels through the timber.
