A Warwickshire man who purchased a bunch of grapes from a local supermarket was caught by surprise upon seeing the fruit crawling with spiders. These were not just any spiders, mind you; they were black widow spiders that are not native to England. Rightfully scared, the man immediately put the grapes in a sealed bin and contacted the authorities.
Upon further inspection, it appears as though a female black widow had made a nest in the grapes and had recently given birth to her young. The BBC report relating the story did not say how many young were found, but the number was apparently significant. Supermarket officials responded with an apology and a commitment to investigate the matter further.
The incident illustrates very clearly how non-native pests spread from one locale to the next. These particular grapes evidently came from Mexico where black widow spiders are abundant. Not surprisingly, agricultural exports are the most common way that non-native species find new homes.
Giving producers and shippers the benefit of the doubt, it is nearly impossible to prevent every single instance of non-native species migration. It is a fact of life. This is why it is vital for companies such as Pest Control Berkshire to stay abreast of what is happening within the pest control industry. We need to be ready at a moment's notice to respond to any pest infestation, regardless of what it entails.
No Need to Panic
There is no need for the public to panic over the black widow spiders found in Warwickshire. It is unlikely that the UK would ever be overrun by this species, as our climate is not conclusive to the long-term survival of these spiders. That said, we do have our fair share of troubles with things such as wasps, hornets, ants, fleas and beetles.
