There are those that think pest controllers have nothing to do over the winter months. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The pests we deal with at this time of year might be different from those we see during the summer, but they are no less persistent. For example, we start seeing an uptick in cockroach calls during the winter.
You do not see cockroaches outdoors during the winter for obvious reasons. But guess what? They do make their way indoors like so many other pests. It's only natural. Cockroaches want a warm, safe place to hide out. And if they find such a place, they are more than willing to start breeding.
So, how can you know if you have a cockroach infestation? Look for the following three warning signs:
1. Cockroach Faeces
The warning sign that triggers most of our calls is the presence of cockroach faeces. Faeces can take on one of two forms depending on what cockroaches are eating. Solid faeces look like small, black droppings while liquid faeces look more like black streaks. You'll see them on floors, worktops, baseboards, and so forth.
2. An Odd and Offensive Odour
Cockroaches gathering in large numbers produce an odd and offensive odour that is easily recognised by pest control professionals. If you see what appear to be cockroach faeces accompanied by a smell you don't recognise, there's a good chance you're looking at an infestation.
3. Shed Skins
Cockroaches shed their skins numerous times between the nymph stage and adulthood. A shed skin looks a lot like a live cockroach but without a head and legs. You'll know one when you see one.
What You Should Do
If you suspect you might have a cockroach infestation in your home, we recommend several things. First, use a torch to thoroughly search areas cockroaches might be hiding in. Look under the fridge, behind the cooker, and in kitchen cabinets. Check the bathrooms as well. Even though kitchens are where cockroaches most often congregate (that's where they find food) they are also known to like the dark, moist areas bathrooms afford them.
Next, do a few night inspections. Wearing shoes to protect your feet, pay a visit to the kitchen without turning the lights on. If there are cockroaches present, you should see them scurrying around the minute you enter the room.
Finally, call us as soon as you confirm a problem. As experts in pest control in Hampshire, Wiltshire, and Berkshire, we have the tools, skills, and experience to eradicate your home of these unpleasant pests. We will send a technician out to diagnose the seriousness of the problem and offer a solution.
Winter is the time of year when we see more cockroach infestations due to the insects seeking refuge from the cold. If you believe you might have an infestation, please don't wait to call. Cockroaches are quite prolific. They do not need much time to become a big problem.
