Christmas is supposed to be about family, faith, peace, and goodwill. The last thing anyone wants is for Christmas celebrations to be interrupted by rat problems. However, that is exactly what could happen to many families this year, according to some experts. The warm summer and unusually mild autumn could be a harbinger of a potential rat invasion this Christmas.
According to Basis Prompt managing director Rob Simpson, Britons should be prepared to deal with more rats this Christmas as the rodents seek shelter indoors with the onset of colder weather. He told the Daily Express that this year's crop of animals could grow up to 2 feet in length and be resistant to many common poisons sold over-the-counter.
Simpson blames the unusually mild conditions the UK has experienced for most of this year. Rats have taken advantage of that weather to remain outdoors, where they can feast to their heart's content. Nevertheless, when the cold weather hits in the coming weeks, they will be driven indoors. Moreover, they will be lured by the temptation of Christmas turkeys and other goodies served around the holidays.
Consumers are being warned to not ignore early signs of rat infestation. Those signs include scratching and chewing noises emanating from the loft during the overnight hours. Rodents are known to make their homes in lofts, in which they chew on wires and timbers. They will also make their way to other parts of the house to find food.
Closing Entry PointsYou might be surprised to learn that the average British home offers more than a dozen entry points for rats and mice. They can easily make their way in through plumbing, small holes in eaves and roofing, underneath loose slats, and even through uncovered vents. Rats are especially intelligent and persistent when it comes to finding shelter from the winter weather.
You can help prevent a rat infestation in your own home by conducting a thorough inspection to identify entry points. Any areas of concern you find should be dealt with right away. Also, be wary of how you dispose of your rubbish outdoors. Inside, be careful never to leave food lying about. Always properly seal and store food overnight.
