The halls and classrooms of Leigh Primary School in Washwood Heath were mostly empty and quiet during the recent holiday break. We say mostly because the school was not totally unoccupied. Roaming the building were enough mice to catch the attention of the Birmingham City Council pest control team. As a result, the school is to remain closed until January 12 in order to accommodate pest control and deep cleaning.
Headteacher Julie Davies issued a statement informing the community of the closure and apologising for any inconvenience it might cause. In her statement, she explained that pupil safety is the first concern, hoping that parents would look beyond the inconvenience to see a safe environment when classes do resume.
This story serves as a sober reminder that mice are never far away. Even though the school in question is in Birmingham, there are as many mice in Berkshire as there are anywhere else in Britain. Home and business owners need to remain vigilant about the possibility of a rodent infestation, especially during the winter months when mice and rats are moving indoors to find warmth and food.
Signs of Mice InfestationIt is easy to spot a potential infestation of mice if you know what to look for. Keep an eye out for the following:
• Droppings – Mice droppings are the most obvious sign of infestation. Droppings are black, rod-shaped objects that will appear along skirting boards and in corners. You might also find droppings under sinks, in roof spaces and around heating equipment.
• Grey Streaks – Mice that continually travel along the same path leave grey streaks on surfaces they contact. The streaks are the result of the oil found naturally in the fur of the rodents.
• Gnawing Damage – Mice are notorious for chewing just about anything they can get their teeth on. If you notice what appears to be gnawing damage on furniture, paper products, kitchen cupboards, or even electrical wires, there is a good chance you have mice.
