Former British colonist and American Revolutionary Benjamin Franklin once wrote, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Franklin was referring to properly disposing of coals from a household fireplace in order to prevent a potentially catastrophic fire that could burn down an entire town. In essence, it is better to prevent a fire than to rebuild after one occurs. We believe it is appropriate to apply the same principle to greenhouse growers now in the planning stages for their spring plantings.
You may use a greenhouse on your own property during the winter months. If so, taking a few steps in the three months prior to the spring planting season can reduce the likelihood of pests attacking your plants and flowers. Recommended steps include:
• Cleaning – Cleaning and disinfecting a greenhouse can eliminate some of the spots insects might use for overwintering. If they do not find your greenhouse to be habitable and comfortable, they may go elsewhere.
• Exterior Weeding – Weeds on the exterior of your greenhouse can offer an optimal home for a number of pests that will try to work their way inside once the cold weather becomes constant. By weeding now, you will be forcing those pests to move on before they move in.
• Empty Greenhouses – Completely emptying a greenhouse of plant life for just a couple of weeks during the winter offers a lot of benefits. During this period, turn over any soil that will remain indoors. This includes potted soil as well as floor areas used for growing.
A proactive approach to preparing for spring pests includes dealing with any pests you find already overwintering in your greenhouse. Keep an eye open for the potential of beetles, flies, moths, rats, mice, etc. If you suspect you already have unwelcome guests in your greenhouse, you are better off dealing with them right away.
