One of the biggest problems we face in the pest control industry is the ability of household pests to develop resistance to conventional insecticides and pesticides. If it's not wasps successfully adapting to over-the-counter insecticides, it is legions of mutant rats no longer susceptible to poisons the industry has been using for years. Now, thanks to a £220,000 government grant, new research will be conducted in an effort to find a way to break insecticide and pesticide resistance.
Innovate UK is providing the research funding to a consortium that includes the Adapt Low Carbon Group, AlphaBio Control, ApresLabs, and the Food and Environment Research Agency. Researchers will be looking to find a natural compound that can be added to current insecticides that would reduce the ability of household pests to develop resistance. If a natural compound can be found, the researchers believe that they can reduce the amount of chemicals used for pest control without compromising the effectiveness of insecticide and pesticide treatments.
By the time the 18-month project concludes, researchers hope to have a prototype compound ready for testing. Positive test results could mean the compound being available for commercial use by 2021, if not sooner.
