We took no delight in the bombshell report recently published by the Daily Mail detailing terrible rodent and pest problems in UK hospitals. The report paints a very grim picture of the state of the NHS pest control efforts after years of financial neglect. And unfortunately, what is now a big problem for the health service illustrates why proactive vermin control is so important.
According to the Daily Mail, pest control companies made an astonishing 4,500 callouts to NHS facilities during a 12-month period between 2016 and 2017. They made more than 3,600 callouts between April and December alone. Those callouts amounted to a total bill in excess of £3 million.
Big Problems Due to Neglect
The Daily Mail claims their investigation revealed significant rodent and insect problems in NHS hospitals. Some of those problems were serious enough that they involved operating theatres, environments that are supposed to be pristinely clean and germ-free. This has the rest of us asking the obvious question - why?
Apparently, it all boils down to neglect. The NHS seemingly did not invest enough money in pest control over the last several decades to keep things in check. Not a smart move. As pest control experts, we know that if you do not keep a problem in check at all times then it doesn't take much for that problem to get out of control.
Summer and Winter Vermin Control
A good example to illustrate this point is summer and winter vermin control. We get a lot of calls for vermin during the winter months as the pests make their way into homes, commercial buildings, etc. What is perceived to be increased activity in the winter is really just a reflection of the weather.
What many people don't realise is that vermin are active year-round. We don't see them as much in the summer because they are out and about. It's only when the weather turns cold that they seek shelter inside buildings. That's when we notice them, and that's when we call in pest control experts.
Proactive vermin control looks beyond winter callouts to control populations year-round. A proactive strategy seeks to find out where rodents are when they are most likely to breed, so that proliferation can be stopped in its tracks. It doesn't wait until people start seeing rats and mice scurrying across the floor.
