5 Pests to Be on the Lookout for This Spring

Wednesday, March 06, 2019

If you are familiar with our pest control in Reading, Berkshire, Hampshire, etc., you are probably aware that we are experts in wasp nest removal and rodent control. As spring approaches, there won't be much call for those two services, yet that does not mean Control Services will not be busy. There are plenty of other pests for us to attend to.

We are fortunate in that we don't have to deal with some of the more serious pests found in other parts of the world. But we still have our fair share. Below are five pests that generally start to emerge during the early spring. Be on the lookout for them.

1. Ants

Ants are among the most prolific insects this time of year. They start reproducing early on, and they get right to work doing whatever it is they do. The thing about ants is that conventional treatments are less effective the later you go in the year. That's why it's so important to deal with ants as soon as they make their presence known. Be on the lookout for ants in your garden as well as your kitchen.

2. Beetles

We have the pleasure of sharing the land with several different species of beetles. Most species do not bother humans because they don't live anywhere near us. As such, there are really only three types that pest controllers concern themselves with: carpet beetles, biscuit beetles, and ground beetles.

The worst of the three is the carpet beetle. Actually, the larvae is a bigger concern than the adult beetle. Carpet beetle larva can damage carpets in short order, thus their name.

3. Cockroaches

We've posted a lot of articles about cockroaches in the past, so we won't bore you by repeating already discussed information. Suffice to say that cockroaches can be problematic year around. They can be especially challenging in the spring when we're all busy spring cleaning. Cleaning is good, but it can disturb cockroaches you never knew were there.

4. Flies

Flies that may have entered your home last autumn will start to emerge come spring. Like everything else in nature, they're itching to make babies and collect food. They are also itching to get outside, which may prove more difficult than it seems. Fly swarms in loft spaces is not unusual during the spring.

5. Snails and Slugs

Though we don't deal with snails and slugs, they can be problematic for spring gardens. The best way to deal with them is to simply let nature take its course. Snails and slugs have plenty of natural predators, so they won't be causing problems in your garden for too long.

That's it for our spring pest round up. As always, please contact Control Services to address your pest problems. We offer quick and discreet service provided by fully trained technicians. We would be more than happy to come out, see what you have going on, and offer you a remediation plan.
